We first featured Natalie Wong last year ahead of Powerplay Griffin Sessions, for her “100 Paper Sneakers” Project. She left our shores shortly after, feeling inspired. Her latest is a collaborative effort with Sneaker Exchange and this is what she had to say:
“The day after SXC confirmed the collaboration, I went to a Shepard Fairey exhibition in Hong Kong. During a conversation with his OBEY team, they told me that Fairey had created a giant mural of Nelson Mandela in Johannesburg back in 2014. When I arrived in Johannesburg, the SXC team took us to Braamfontein and I spotted the giant Mandela mural. Underneath Mandela’s image were the words ‘The Purple Shall Govern’ and it was only after seeing that mural did I learn about the Purple Rain Protest.”
The AJ4 gets a colour treatment based on the colours of the South African flag with particular significance given to the purple jumpman.
