We at BMK don’t pay nearly enough respect to the local cats doing their thing in art circles. One, that needs a special mention is East London born performing artist, Athi-Patra Ruga. His work transcends many cultural and historical barriers, focussing on identity issues, sexuality, politics and cultural tensions under the guise of fictional characters rooted in Xhosa Mythology. The performance pieces Ruga puts on, is always a visually dynamic and rich showcase, and has lead to him performing all over the world.
THE FUTURE WHITE WOMEN OF AZANIA SAGA
Without giving too much away, Ruga happens to have an exhibition coming up this Wednesday which promises to be an installation experience like none other, but don’t rule out the possibility of performance finding its way into the opening evening . Go check it out. It runs from The 27th November until the 8 February at the What If The World Gallery.
